Can I bike to that drink?
If I want to use a BlueBike to ride to a gnarly bar, which stations
are close to bays that have plenty of docks?
Who doesn’t love a cold drink after a bike ride? I’ve compiled a list
of gnarly bars in the Somervile/Cambridge/Boston in relation to
Bluebikes docking stations. I
wouldn’t advise attempting a cycling bar hop (don’t drink and bike,
folks), but you could bike to your first destination and then walk or
take a Lyft to your next one. The size of the circles indicate the
number of docks within a hub. The markers represent the location of
the bars on this list. The larger the circle, that greater the chance
that you'll find parking. It also increases the number of people
you'll likely interact with and, given the nature of most of the bars
on my list, your odds of getting into a fistfight.
Highly Accessible Dives
Sligo Pub
Davis Square
Of course we're starting with
Sligo. A bar
best visited in the morning when Doug is behind the bar, bringing you
tour stories and High Lifes (they open at 10am). The evening is a
completely different beast and with a whopping 25 docks, the odds are
always high for shenannigans.
Grendel's Den
Harvard Square
Grendel's is hit or miss.
You can have a nice glass of wine when it's warm outside without
incident, or some kid claiming to be a civil engineer will try to
convince you to eat drugged oysters. Grendels' is the closest to the
23 docks at Harvard Kennedy School, but I'd say just leave your bike
and walk to Shay's instead.
Shay's Pub
Harvard Square
Shay's is a slightly
farther walk from the docks at JFK School, but the distance is
negligable and you'll be thankful that you came here instead of
Grendel's.
Charlie's Kitchen
Harvard Square
Rounding out the triumvirate in Harvard we have
Charlie's. The
bathrooms are extremely gross but the jukebox is on point and they do
make a mean double cheeseburger. Also a better choice than Grendel's.
The Druid
Inman Square
The Druid is open until 2am
and I have spent many a night scuttling past the throng of
after-partiers gathered in the front. The Druid is within half a block
of another 25-dock bay, which is nice if you want to go earlier and
eat some fish and chips.
Bukowski
Back Bay
I will say,
Bukowski's staff is really
good at turning away people who are too drunk, which is good if you
are able to get inside, but may not bode well if they are at capacity.
This one is catty-corner from a 23-dock hub on Newbury St.
Quasi Accessible Dives
Silhouette Lounge
Allston
The Sil always has
hot popcorn, a bartender that yells at you, and a nice cast of misfits
hanging out by the pool table. It's closer to the 19-dock bay at Union
Square than the Model is, which is a good thing.
Magoun Saloon
Somerville
Magoun's will not bat an eye
if you whip out a balisong knife and do tricks with it. And they do a
good Oktoberfest. Half a block away from 19 docks is not bad.
Least Accessible Dives
Notch and Super Bien
Brighton
Ok, so
Super Bien
is not really a dive and the chances of getting into a fistfight are
slim, but you will want to punch the guy that's mansplaining Sludge
Metal to you. It's a long walk to a 19-dock bay.
Highland Kitchen
Somerville
I'm actually really glad that this one is several blocks from a
19-dock bay because
Highland Kitchen is an
absolute gem.
The Model
Allston
I'm also really glad that
The Model is several
blocks from the bay near the Silhouette because no one should ever go
here. Nothing good ever happens here. I saw an old woman break up a
fight between two large men and then proceeded to lecture them for
half an hour.
